Overview

Lake-Sumter EMS strives to provide quality educational opportunities that will further the mission of the service. Furthermore, in an effort to promote community-based support, strengthen interagency alliances, and foster a solid recruiting base, Lake-Sumter EMS offers a Ride Along Program. This program allows the participant an opportunity to learn more about Lake-Sumter EMS and the exciting world of pre-hospital emergency care in Lake and Sumter counties.

Philosophy
The Ride Along Program provides a quality educational experience for the participant. Candidates for the program should at a minimum meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have an interest in emergency medical services as a career (i.e. high school or college student, career-changer, etc.)
  • Have an interest in emergency medical services as a job related educational opportunity
  • Have an interest in emergency medical services as a decision maker (i.e. elected official, board member, leadership participant, taxpayer, etc.)

Restrictions

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age (exceptions can be made at the discretion of the executive director for seniors in high school). A copy of the applicant’s drivers license is required.
  • Ride time is prohibited from the hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • To enhance the ride-along learning experience, observers shall be initially assigned to a QRV Supervisory vehicle. At the discretion of the supervisor, riders may be granted temporary assignment to an operational ambulance for clinical observation.
  • At no time shall a participant in the Ride Along Program be allowed to participate in patient care and treatment, regardless of medical certification. The participants are there strictly as observers and are not expected, obligated or needed to assist in patient care under any circumstances.

Enrollment
All candidates for the Ride Along Program shall be coordinated through the Quality-Training Officer. This includes enrollment, paperwork, applicable required training and scheduling.
