64E-2.008 Emergency Medical Technician

Renewal Certification …To be eligible for renewal certification as an EMT an individual shall complete the following within 2 years prior to the expiration date of his or her EMT certification:

  1. Complete 30 hours of EMT refresher training based on the 1996 U.S. DOT EMT-Basic National Standard Refresher Curriculum by one of the 3 below methods:
      • The department shall accept the affirmation of a licensed EMS provider’s medical director (i.e., Pushpal R. (Paul) Banerjee, D.O.)
        • Under our Medical Director,Pushpal R. (Paul) Banerjee, D.O., an individual must document the following hours in the below categories in order to obtain his written affirmation of successful recertification:
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Airway category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Cardiology category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Medical category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Obstetrics and Pediatrics category
          • A minimum of 6-hours in the Trauma category
          • A minimum of 6-hours in the Operations category
          • A minimum of 2-hours in the Elective category
      • The department shall accept a certificate of completion of refresher training from a department approved Florida training program (i.e., Lake Technical Center)
      • The department shall accept the satisfactorily completion of the first semester of the paramedic training course at a department approved Florida training center pursuant to Section 401.2701, F.S., within the current 2-year certification cycle (i.e., Lake Technical Center)
  2. Complete 2 hours of HIV AIDS refresher training, in accordance with Section 381.0034, F.S.
  3. Maintain a current CPR card as provided in Section 401.27(4)(e)2., F.S., and Rule 64E-2.038, F.A.C.

 

64E-2.009 Paramedic

Renewal Certification …To be eligible for renewal certification as a paramedic an individual shall complete the following within 2 years prior to the expiration date of his or her paramedic certification:

  1. Complete 30 hours of paramedic refresher training based on the 1998 U.S. D.O.T. EMT-Paramedic National Standard Refresher Curriculum by one of the 3 below methods:
      • The department shall accept either the affirmation of a licensed EMS provider’s medical director (i.e., Pushpal R. (Paul) Banerjee, D.O.)
        • Under our Medical Director, Pushpal R. (Paul) Banerjee, D.O., an individual must document the following hours in the below categories in order to obtain his written affirmation of successful recertification:
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Airway category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Cardiology category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Medical category
          • A minimum of 4-hours in the Obstetrics and Pediatrics category
          • A minimum of 6-hours in the Trauma category
          • A minimum of 6-hours in the Operations category
          • A minimum of 2-hours in the Elective category
      • The department shall accept a certificate of completion of refresher training from a department approved Florida training program (i.e., Lake Technical Center)
      • The department shall accept a department approved continuing education provider as proof of compliance
      • Successfully pass the paramedic certification examination during the current certification cycle
  2. Complete 2 hours of HIV AIDS refresher training in accordance with Section 381.0034, F.S.
  3. Maintain a current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) card as provided in Section 401.27(4)(e)2., F.S., and Rule 64E-2.038, F.A.C.

 

However, per Rickey Stone at the Florida Bureau of EMS: If an individual was initially certified within the current recertification cycle 2006-2008 (after December 1, 2006) in Florida, then they only need to complete the 2-hours of HIV AIDS refresher training and maintain a current CPR or ACLS card as applicable to the certification.

Therefore if you received your initial certification in either EMT or paramedic in Florida since December 1, 2006, then you only need to receive a completion of HIV/AIDS towards your recertification hours. Credit can only be allowed if you received your initial training in Florida.
